Waratah (Telopea speciosissima)
Waratah is the floral emblem of the State of New South Wales. This genus has only five species and is only found in New South Wales and Victoria. The Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) grows up to three metres high, with a diameter of 1.5 metres. The lobed or toothed leaves are obovate and up to 15 cm long. Waratah likes moist soil, and grows in scrubby areas or as undergrowth in semi-open forests. Discovering a Waratah in flower in the bush in springtime is very exciting. It is certainly a very majestic plant. Large red bracts surround its 15 cm large terminal flower head. Other uses: The Waratah is very rich in nectar. The Aborigines harvested the nectar, by washing it out with a little water. The Aboriginal “dreamtime” story of the beautiful flower, Waratah, has been handed down from generation to generation and is retold earlier in this book.
