Ribbon Gum (Eucalyptus elata)
You’ll find Ribbon Eucalyptus in coastal forests, in altitudes of up to 750 metres, in valleys and on riverbanks of New South Wales and Victoria. This tree thrives in good soil growing up to 45 metres tall. Its dark brown fibrous bark peels off in summer and hangs in long ribbons from branches, hence the name Ribbon Gum. However, several other Eucalyptus trees have bark that peels this way. Eucalyptus elata is also called peppermint gum since the leaves smell like peppermint.
